- 11 Jun 2008 02:55 by fmlondon: Screen Snapshots: The Great Al Jolson 1955/Hollywood On Parade #5 1932:
These are two examples, I believe, of the Marx Brothers together which have not been made commercially available. I have checked with Wayne Boenig who does not have them. Does anyone have copies of these? In the case of Screen Snapshots, I believe it would be the last real appearance of all three (unless Tonight: America After Dark with all 5 brothers 2-18-57 surfaces). Any leads appreciated. Thank you.
- 19 May 2008 02:16: Harpo's year of birth: Great site! On page 17 of HARPO SPEAKS, Harpo says "Adolph is the name I was given, when I was born, in New York City, in 1893." However, every source I see, including your site, shows him as being born in 1888 (November 23, my wife's birthday, coincidentally). Thoughts?
REPLY: This is a mistake in "Harpo Speaks". The widely agreed year of birth is 1888.
- 09 Feb 2008 02:56: Great new article about Groucho and the guitar: Just found this interesting new article on Groucho's guitar playing, one of the least documented facets of his life.

- 05 Jan 2008 08:26 by R.C. Banta: Mystery actresses: Any idea of the names of these two actresses: The first would be the women who was pursued by Harpo throughout Animal Crackers. The second is the woman who played the lemonade vendors (Edgar Kennedy)wife. I have never heard either actress referred to by name, which is a shame since they both contributed to two of the funniest movies ever. Any assistance is appreciated. R.C. Banta
- 28 Dec 2007 04:04 by hebrooks: Marx bros statues: I still have the Groucho "esco" statue from the 70's. I got it in 70/71 while living in Queens, NY. I would love to complete the set!
- 13 Oct 2007 02:13: Marx Brothers in mystery novel: Just wanted to make you aware: my newest mystery novel kicks off the Double Feature Mystery series, in which a man buys a movie theatre to show only comedies (he calls it Comedy Tonight), and in the first novel in the series (Some Like It Hot-Buttered), he professes his love for the Marx Brothers many times, quotes Groucho, and during a few chapters, shows Horse Feathers. If you're interested, please take a look at: www.jeffcohenbooks.com. Love the site, and am a huge Marx fan.
- 09 Oct 2007 10:13: I'm a 54 year old man from great britain and started watching the marx brothers when I was a child and wow what fun we had. Even now we watch them and still laugh, they haven't dated at all, so sad that they have all gone. We will never see their like again. God bless them and thanks andrew
- 26 Feb 2007 04:12 by pferrara: Great site. I enjoyed it very much. I wrote a song called Harpo and put a video to it. Please check it out on You Tube under the title "Harpo - US" and let me know what you think. Thanks again.

- 25 Jan 2007 03:30: Hiya, I was reading the links in your site about the different recordings of Harpo talking (cool!)and there was the comment that there was the debate over whether Harpo can be heard singing in Monkey Business. I've also noticed that in A Day at the Races, when they are in the sanitarium operating room and Chico, Groucho and Harpo are washing their hands in the basins and singing you can see Harpo's mouth moving and to me it sounds like you can hear three voices. But it may just be me being hopeful and imagining it. What do ya think?
Cheers

- 01 Jan 2007 10:04: Photos?: Hi, my compliments on an excellent site, and I am sure that the passion which created it continues to consume you (and too many funds). Did I miss it, or is there no gallery of the individual brothers Marx? While an extensive gallery would eat valuable server space, it would be nice if there were at least one image of each, perhaps with their bio. Many thanks for the rest of the info.
Best regards,
Brent
(Reply by Stefan: Brent is right with his comments and I will try to add some pictures in the near future.)
- 17 Dec 2006 16:25: Footnote to Miscellaneous Section: Michael Yahn notes in the miscellaneous section that all the Marx girls have names that begin with an "M." This is not a coincidence. As a point of interest, in Judaism, you do not name a child after a dead person, but honor the deceased by naming the child with the initial. The Marx granddaughters all had "M" names (Melinda, Maxine, etc.) as a tribute to their formidable grandmother, Minnie.
- 06 Dec 2006 15:27: Hi there. I've been wracking my name trying to remember the name of a song that Chico Marx played on piano in one of their movies. Harpo may have been the one to play it. I don't know if it was a ragtime song or what it would be called, I know its probably from the 20's, a real jazzy fun song to play. Maybe you can think of someway that I could find it. thanks. Bonnie
- 09 Nov 2006 19:36: I have the three figures you show on the website here - harpo , groucho and chico - I bought these approximately 17 years ago in a very expensive china shop in Marbella , costa Del sol - I think at the time they cost me around £200 each and were produced by Lladro under the great entertainers series - they are a limited and numbered edition
I am actually looking to sell these - so if you by any chance know of anyone who would be interested please let me know
- 23 Oct 2006 05:17: The site has everything you could want on the brothers, and so organized. I'm a new Marx Brothers fan; at 48 I regret all the years wasted on lesser comediens, years that I could have been enjoying them. I look forward to completing my knowledge and dvd collection. I agree with the young lady that said she should have been born 40 years earlier. I also am mad about Chico. What charisma! All the brothers just have that something that you can't quite pinpoint. I can't imagine what it would have been like to have met them in person. Staggering I would believe. Thanks so much for an amazing site.

- 27 Sep 2006 18:48: Brilliant website. My Father brought me up on the boys and their humour still stands the test of time today. In fact they were years ahead of their time which many of today's comics will testify....Hello I must be going !

- 29 May 2006 00:00 by Peter: Great website, brilliant subject matter. My fifteen year old son has just fallen in love with the Marx Brothers so it is something of a family tradition now.
I don't think that any one has had a greater influence on the development of intelligent modern comedy than the Marx Brothers, they still appeal on all levels, they are still influencing people. My favourite British comedian, Spike Milligan, always cited them as his biggest influence.
In agreement with an ealier guest on this site, if everyone had the Marx Brothers in their lives the world would, indeed, be a happier place.
Thanks for the website
- 03 Feb 2006 14:07 by celia the seal: i love the marx bros! they should be in everybody's life and the world would be a happier place.
- 21 Jan 2006 20:37 by David Edwards: Congratulations on possibly the finest site I have seen regarding the Marx Bros. It has certainly improved my knowledge of them and has given me direction in completing my collection. Keep up the good work.
- 16 Dec 2005 22:03 by TOR Hershman: "Duck Soup" should be shown in every school on the planet.
The Marx Brothers were one of my earliest and strongest comedy influences.
Keep-up the great work you've done on the site.
The History of the Marx (Marrix) family was most interesting.

- 02 Sep 2005 05:34 by Bianca Zoratto: The Marx Brothers are an international icon. Their talent, music and laughter that they shared with the world will forever be remembered. And their comic genius is something that shall always be referred to throughout history. Like Chaplin, I watched the Marx Brothers when I was very young as well, my nonno and nonna (my grandparents) would always have them on video for me to watch and I used to think that they were the coolest guys around. My nonno's favourite character was Chico, how the way he talked used to make my nonno laugh. Sorry about the use colloquialism, but I do still think that now, at 18 years of age. After decades later their comedy films are something that can never and will never be outlived. Hooray for the Marx Brothers!!! Salute per i fratellli di Marx!!!!!
- 20 Aug 2005 01:25 by ron: Thank you for this website.. now i know Harpo could talk. and info on Gummo & Zeppo very interesting..
- 15 Aug 2005 06:01 by DJwWakefield: Saw the two references above to name of the duck. I've been searching for the duck's name for over 30 years. Can anyone help?
- 09 Aug 2005 04:13 by A young fan of the Marx Brothers: The kings of comedy. What excellence that can never be forgotten. I'm probably by far the only fifteen year old who has such a passion for them. Hearing Harpo talk was by far the best part of the site. I wasn't too thrilled with his repeating profanity, but other than that, it was an exceptionally good thing. Starting as a young child, I had a fascination for there movies. The closeness of the brothers added to that special charm to their movies. I was never disappointed, and whenever I found that they had a movie I had never seen, I would rush to watch it.
I can't really choose favorites since they each added their own special charm. Harpo always amazes me when he picks up someone, or runs around the stage at his age. In my eyes, it was defiantly unfair that Harpo was quieted, but I don’t think it would be as funny as it is now days if he spoke. He always seemed to have a way of capturing the camera with his silence.
If I had to choose my favorites, it would be Harpo and Chico because they SEEMED to be so inseparable on camera. A loud clap, and honk, to the Marx Brothers, the best comedian foursome to ever roam the earth.
- 07 Aug 2005 01:58 by Lena: Very informative. I like.
- 15 Jul 2005 03:18 by catherine: im 16 and i love the marx brothers and have for the better part of my life...i even named my four ducks after them, according to personality and such. this website is great for finding information that would not be normally known, such as lyrics to lydia the tattooed lady, sound clips, and pictures. hopefully more people will get to know who they are, because they are truely the funniest people to ever make movies!
- 11 Jul 2005 06:14 by lisa: Ha! I guess anyone my age (16) vaguely knows about the Marx Bros. Groucho, at least. On a whim, I picked up a documentary about them at the library, because I didn't really know who they were. After that I watched "A Night at The Opera," and it was absolutely fantastic. I've never laughed so much during a movie in my life. Ahh...what giggling frenzies. Can't wait to watch more of them!
- 29 Jun 2005 21:01 by sarleydj: About six months ago I adopted an apricot standard poodle from a rescue organization. He has beautiful blond curly hair and a quiet disposition. I renamed him "Harpo" after my favorite Marx Brother! What amazes me is how many people when I tell them his name don't know who Harpo Marx is! Very sad that so many of the "younger generations" are not familiar with the Marx Brothers and, in particular, Harpo.
- 12 Jan 2005 23:43 by Sarah: Nice site.
- 01 Jan 2005 06:59 by Dorrit Takach: I would love to write to Maxine Marx, or Mariam Marx Allen. Is there any way to contact them?
- 07 Dec 2004 00:54 by Steve Burstein: I recommend the US region 1 DVD of LOVE HAPPY.In this sparkling rediscovered print with "new" scenes it's actually a good film.
- 04 Dec 2004 02:09 by Heidiho: My mother has searched high and low for the duck's name. What is it?
- 01 Dec 2004 22:42 by Leo: My favorite movie is Duck Soup - My Mama loves A Night At The Opera -
Your Marxist Propaganda link with the "mirror sequence" is the best!
- 27 Nov 2004 19:23 by Pat Ruthenberg: I haven't been through the entire website yet. I am just so thrilled to have been able to hear Harpo really speak! I've been a fan since I was a teenager. My grandmother saw them when they came to Chicago and my mother saw
Chico when he was out promoting their movies. What a thrill! Thanks again.
- 20 Oct 2004 06:35 by jim: Great website and Thanks! Does anyone know what movie this line was from "When love goes out the door lust comes inuendo" or something like that.

- 06 Jul 2004 00:08 by Ben: To the absolutely finest comedy team in history. Much love, honks, and assorted insults. You godda da plans?
- 08 Jun 2004 01:17 by Vincent: This is an astounding site, one of the most informative, sharply designed and easy to navigate sites I've ever encountered. I've been a Marx Brothers fan since childhood, even talking my Dad into driving 90 miles to New York City's palatial Sutton Theatre so his 11-year-old son could see the original theatrical reissue of ANIMAL CRACKERS. What a thrill. Anyhow, I have two questions. First: What chance do we have of ever seeing a pristine print of HORSE FEATHERS, with a non-butchered version of the sequence in Thelma Todd's apartment? You need a script to catch all the dialogue and I've always wanted to see the extended Harpo footage. Second: During The Monkees' (you remember them) first season, they produced an episode called "Monkees In Manhattan". It took place in a hotel room and they were trying to stall for time while securing a backer for some writer's musical show. The plot sounds vaguely familiar. Now, I know ROOM SERVICE wasn't originally written for The Marx Brothers, but it would be just another forgotten play if they hadn't filmed it. Considering the Marxes' influence on The Monkees (there's also an episode called "at the Circus"), I'm amazed no mention of this direct connection has ever been made. I own the DVD boxed set of The Monkees' first season and while tons of background info and trivia is given about each episode, no mention is made that this one is obviously based on ROOM SERVICE. Conspiracy?
- 24 May 2004 20:32 by Jacob: The memory of the amazingly talented foursome will always live in the hearts of millions. They were legends on and off the screen. Each of the films they did together are classics containing unforgettable scenes i.e Mirror Sequence in Duck Soup(1933). Their dialogue with others, especially Groucho's quick-witted one-liners are icing on the cake. They made their job look effortless, at times being incredibly hilarious, side-splittingly funny. They are the kings of comedy and they shall never lose their title.
- 27 Apr 2004 21:41 by Stefan: Hi Lili, I haven't heard of any plans yet to release the MGM movies outside the US.
- 25 Apr 2004 19:45 by Lili: hi ! Your site is great ! (Excuse my english, but i'm french !!!) I've bought 3 dvd of the marx brothers and l've heard about the few dvd that will go out on may. Are they going to be published for the french dvd zone? I'm looking too for a man that look exactly like groucho... ha ha ha. Thank you.
- 13 Feb 2004 22:33 by Stefan: Hi Annie, "Papa Romani" can be found in the "Marx Brothers Collection" published by Passport/Koch (see DVD page for details)
- 13 Feb 2004 12:54 by annie brown: The Fantastic Four knew all there was to know on comedy and loony fun. I have collected some of the films but most have been deleted. Can't get much of the stuff now. Looking especially for Papa Romani and I Love Lucy. Harpo certainly had a way about him but could get away with his cheekiness. Chico had that gleam in his eye and a fantastic bewitching smile. Pity Zeppo left so early. Chico and Harpo are my all time favourite performers.
- 12 Feb 2004 14:44 by Freddy Dotson: What was the duck's name?
- 30 Jan 2004 22:27 by Corina Post: I love this site and I'm a huge fan of Harpo. Though I've never heard his voice before and this site told me! By far, the best Marx Bros. page!

Tremendous... Thank you so much! Marx Brothers live on 4eva x x
- 14 Jan 2004 04:12 by George Babcock: What show did Groucho say "Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough"?
What was the name of the duck? I thought that Groucho called it by name.
- 06 Jan 2004 14:28 by nathan williams: How and why did the marx brothers get their nicknames?
- 28 Nov 2003 02:17 by Catherine (Liz) Bernal: This site is awsome! I had seen one of the Marx movies in English class my senior year in high school and have become a fan of them ever since. Thanx for all the info!
- 07 Jul 2003 20:19 by John: Hey Ellie- Glad to hear you like the Marx's! I have all their films and some rare tv shows. I also have most of the music they ever put out. I have about 130 You Bet Your Life shows that Groucho did. The Maxine book on Chico is the only one on him. Harpo only did one also. You should see his Papa Romani tv show. It was short lived but stars him. Let me know if I can be of any help, okay? A fellow Marxist - John
- 14 Jun 2003 13:29 by Ellie: I am so glad I found this website! I'm probably the only 17 year old girl that is mad about the Marx brothers and this site was fantastic, Harpo's voice! I never thought I'd hear it but I have and it's beautiful! Thank you marx-brothers.org! I've often been told I should have been born 40 years ago but at least I didn't need a time machine to hear Harpo. I would love to know more about Chico, the only book I can find is by his daughter Maxine, would this be the best book to buy? Thanks, Ellie
- 02 Jun 2003 21:59 by Hannah: Great site! I loved hearing Harpo talked though I was rather disappointed when he cursed or repeated what cursing the woman said. Harpo is still my definate favorite though! Way to go Harpo! A Night At The Opera and A Day At The Races were my favorites!
