Gummo dropped out early on. I think that Harpo's Autobiography has a good telling of the history of the Marx Brothers as an act. I think you'd enjoy reading it! |

Zeppo had replaced Gummo in the act long before they began making movies, while they were still in Vaudeville (mid-late 1910s). Zeppo was in all of the brothers' shows on Broadway, which included The Cocoanuts , which ran at the Lyric Theatre from 1925 through 1927 and toured the U.S. through 1928. By the time it was filmed in 1929, the brothers were performing Animal Crackers at the 44th Street Theater in the evenings while filming The Cocoanuts during the day. I realize this is straying a bit from the topic, but I wanted to put a little historical perspective on the issue. Basically, by the time the Marxes took The Cocoanuts to the silver screen, Gummo had been out of the act for over 10 years. Frank ------------------
