Can anyone tell me the titles of two of Chico's piano solos? First, the repetitive piece from "Animal Crackers" ("I can't think of the ending." "That's funny, I can't think of anything else."). Second, the piece Chico plays for Thelma Todd in "Horse Feathers" after singing "Everyone Says I Love You" ("I have to stay here, but there's no reason why you folks shouldn't go out into the lobby until this thing blows over."). Thanks very much. |

I'm afraid I can't get really close to the answer to this question. Chico's piano solos were usually unidentified in the films, and there is very little known about them. The only reason I'm replying at all is to avoid (or perhaps cause) confusion about the piece you describe from "Animal Crackers." I just want to point out that, while this tune sounds a lot like "Sugartime" (you know..."Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at suppertime"), it isn't. "Sugartime" was written by the team of Echols/Philips in the 1950s, more than twenty years after "Animal Crackers" was released on film (it was a hit for the McGuire sisters in 1958 and has since been recorded by many other acts). Whether these two had Chico's tune in mind when they wrote "Sugartime" is anybody's guess (seems plausible). As far as the Horse Feathers solo is concerned, I'm afraid I haven't a clue. Always willing to add my vague blah-blahs to the general mish-mash, I remain, Frank ------------------

"Sugar in the Morning" existed LONG before "Sugartime" (which is basically a jazzed-up "Sugar in the Morning"...). In fact, even by the time of ANIMAL CRACKERS, it was something of a joke among show biz types... ( and no, I don't know who wrote it or first sang it...) |
