Hi--

A friend of mine told me about an animated Marx Bros series in the works, but there were legal problems brewing with it. Anybody know anything about this, or where I can find out about it.
Also, anybody know who owns the rights to the Marx Brothers as characters?

Thanks,
Hugo

Back in the early '70s animators Rankin-Bass did a special for ABC called "The Mad Comedians". It featured three segments: George Burns and Jack Benny; one a can't recall; and one with the Marx Bros. I seem to recall some controversy at the time of airing concerning the use of likenesses, but it's been so long... That's all I can contribute.

Mmmm...I don't know about legal issues, but I've seen a few cels on E-Bay. Their Groucho looks a little too caffinated, and the others don't appear as intellgent as the real Marx Brothers did in their movies. Even Harpo had some sort of a plan when annoying people. I hope in comes to the U.S., but I also hope it "must be going".

If it never comes, at least you can still enjoy the Animaniacs show, the closest thing to animated Marxes we have...their names ending in -0 seems to be no coincidence. I still can't quite place who the Warner Brothers seem to be modeled after. Wacko reminds me of a mixture of Harpo and one of the Beatles from "Help" or "Hard Day's Night". The other brother has got to be Groucho.

I don't know who, if anyone, owns rights to the Marxes as a whole, but at another forum sight i learned of an entity called Groucho Marx productions, which controls rights to Groucho's image.

I remember as was noted in another post that the ABC Special THOSE MAD MAD MAD COMEDIANS which aired on ABC April 7, 1970, had that Marx Bros. sketch that was referred to. Groucho himself did his voice, and Harpo and Chico where done by Paul Leeds a well known animated voice specialist, did a lot with Rocky and Bullwinkle and those Christmas specials, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and such. It was a send up of the Napoleon's sketch from I'LL SAY SHE IS, I had originally thought it was a radio sketch that was animated, but later learned that it had been done for the show. Hope this helps.
