Hi

I grew up with a father who loved the Marx Brothers, and taught me routines & showed me Harpo-isms and bought me books about them but I am ashamed to admit I never saw any of the movies until recently. (It was sort of like I had seen them, I knew so much, so I never thought about actually SEEING them you know?) Ah well, absess makes the heart grow fonder....
So they are my new obsession & I have rented Horsefeathers & Animal Crackers, & I caught Night in Casablanca on TV a couple of weeks ago. I had surgery last week and I am home with nothing to do a lot, and I have my days & nights mixed up. So last night I am flipping channels & come upon Roseanne's talk show. She is talking to this little chubby, balding, soft spoken middle aged man & something caught my interest so I stopped to watch. I was so surprised that it was Bud Cort from Harold & Maude!
I don't know if this is general knowledge among Marxists, but he told a story of living in Groucho's house for 7 years and that Groucho died in his arms. He also told a funny story about Groucho giving him a tooth he had lost.
Isn't it funny how lately I have been trying to find out more personal details about the brothers Marx (I have developed a crush on Groucho) and I come upon this at 4am during a bout of insomnia (despite painkillers, man!!!)

Hello, I must be going!

Thanks Ray. I just read "My Life With Groucho" by Arthur Marx & I see there is no reference to Bud being there.
Makes me wonder whose tooth that really belonged to????

I recently read Steve Stoliar's book "Raised Eyebrows". Steve was actually lucky enough to HAVE lived in Groucho's house the last two years of Groucho's life. He does mention gatherings at Groucho's where Bud Cort was in attendance, as well as many others. As far as living in Groucho's house goes... well Bud may have stayed over night once or twice, but I doubt he lived there for seven years.

And I liked Bud Cort. I think Harold and Maude was great. Although Ruth Gordon had a lot to do with that too.

By the way, if you have not read Steve's book, I highly recommend it. It is well written and gives a great insight into what went on in Groucho's house those last few years, what with Erin Flemming and all. I think the book is still in print, or perhaps in a library.
