My local paper mentions a rumor that the Marx Brothers first got their names at the Coronado theatre in Rockford Illinois, if you know anything about it let me know. Ciao |

Every theatre trying to raise money for a major rennovation says the Marxes appeared there, and about half the time they're right. (Quite often, a Marx film had played there but it's remembered by old-timers as a live performance, such was the impact of film on audiences seventy years ago.) Legend holds that the Marxes received their nicknames in Galesburg, IL. That story can't be proven because the local papers had no theatre news during the Marxes' one engagement in Galesburg, so we can't check out the other details of the story. Although it's often hard to prove a negative, it's quite easy to prove that the Marxes didn't receive their names at the Coronado. The theatre was built in October, 1927, several years after they had begun using their nicknames professionally, and more than a dozen years after the names had been bestowed for back-stage use. |
