There appears to be a sinister and concerted effort to remove all Marx Brothers DVDs on this side of the Atlantic. Optimists hope it's because they are going to clean them all up and release them together with brilliant outtakes. Pessimists believe if it doesn't have Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey they don't think it counts as comedy. |

Actually, Duck Soup is still available on VHS and, quite frankly, there was no difference between the VHS and the DVD anyway. Even the quality of the transfer and the audio are about equal. My guess is Universal, who owns the Marx Paramount pictures, yanked the DVDs from distribution because of lukewarm sales. If they do release them again I hope they do it right by trying to jack up the quality a bit and including some commentary. Personally, I highly recommend "The Unknown Marx Brothers" on DVD. The DVD release has a few added features, including several film clips not included in the TV release or the VHS, such as a few clips from You Bet Your Life that were never aired. Also, Bob Weide's excellent documentary, "The Marx Brothers In A Nutshell," is coming back out on VHS and DVD later this year. Hopefully, since Bob is involved in the release, there will be some special features on this DVD also. As far as Duck Soup is concerned, if you can settle for VHS, go to Amazon.com or Videoflicks.com. Both have all the Marx movies available on VHS at pretty reasonable prices.
