It's well-known that Groucho was
an admirer of Gilbert and Sullivan and it has also been suggested that
the Kalmar-Ruby songs Groucho sang in several of the films were
made in that style. Therefore it's interesting to learn that
Kalmar-Ruby actually wrote songs "a la Gilbert and Sullivan".
The song where Mrs Teasdale urged Groucho's coronation was further
developed in the second draft but never made it to the finished film;
Mrs Teasdale:
This man is too great for his position,
Without a question.
I'd like to offer this with your permission,
As a suggestion:
I really think he should be King!
All: We really think he should be King!
And wear a crown and everything! He should be King!
Groucho: Although it would please me to govern the throng -
Suppose I were King and everything went wrong?
Mrs Teasdale: The King can do no wrong!
